Stenosis & Strictures
What are stenosis and stricture?
A stenosis is any form of narrowing of a hollow organ. Is there a severe, pathological narrowing of a hollow organ, e.g. the trachea, the small intestine or the esophagus, it is called a stricture. It can be triggered by inflammatory processes, scarring of the organ wall / the surrounding tissue, pathological processes such as tumors and spastic contractions of the surrounding muscles.
Diagnosis and treatment depend on the clinical findings as well as the location of the narrowing and the cause. There are numerous endoscopic minimally invasive procedures for examination and treatment such as balloon dilation, stent placement, sphincterotomy, or drainage to release the constriction.
